Sal Guerrero - Piano

Sal was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and studied at the National Conservatory for ten years.  He started his music career at fourteen, playing with the best band leaders.

Sal is the son of one of the greatest tenor players in the Islands.  He moved to the US in 1974 and attended the Manhattan School of Music.  He studied with:

  • John Lewis (Modern Jazz Quartet) at City College of New York
  • Eddie Palmiery at City College
  • Sir Roland Hanna
  • Short friendship with Bill Evans (My favorite Pianist)
  • Studied with Barry Harris at Jazz Mobil sessions in Harlem New York
  • In 1978 transferred to the Boston Conservatory under a Fulbright Scholarship
  • Attended (during the evening) another school right across the street "Berkley School of Music"
  • Played with the US Army Special Band and tour to Germany for four years
  • After leaving the US Army he returned to New York and played with music greats Tito Puente and the Machito Orchestra.
  • He decided to follow his father's guidance and returned to school in 2001 attending Rutgers University and studying with Stanley Cowell
  • 2001-2004 after death of both his mother and father, Sal graduated with a doctorate in Biomedical Engineering
  • Moved down to Atlanta, Georgia in August 2004
  • Currently work for the Federal Government as a Biomedical Engineer
  • Working in first recording session and trying to finalize Music Studies at Emory University
